Many thanks to all the speakers who have volunteered to help at this event. Your role will be as one of the 'group advisers' (this should become clear as you read on).
The main shift is way from a 'day of presentations' to an interactive event that encourages students to get involved and understand the importance of many issues that will affect them during their PhD.

How Will the Session Work and What Do Advisers Need to Do?
All of the students will be spread evenly across eight tables in the venue (a litle bit like a wedding reception!) You will work with one of the tables of students.
Each of the groups of students will be given one topic to investigate in 25 min, before they have to give a 3 min presentation to the rest of the students. Your role is to help them find out what they need to know. They have been advised to bring a laptop, smart phone or table computer so they can access the internet.
- The information on the GSLS website (accessible through the links on the table above), should be a good starting point for the group, and will give you an idea of the topics that they should know about.
- Please feel free to bring extra resources if you think they might help the group, e.g. leaflets, journal cuttings, example dissertations & first year reports!
You should get the group to focus on the following aspects in this priority order:
- Why it is important to know about this topic
- How they can find out more
- What they need to know
The real emphasis should be on why it is important, so they will want to go and find out more at their own convenience.
You are also expected to give them a few points of feedback, for instance what they did well, or if you think there was an important point that they missed.
Do I Need to be There for the Whole Session?
It would be great if you can be there for all of the session. But I realise that you are all very busy and may need to do other things.
As you can see from the time table, you will need to be with the students for the 25 min when you are advising the students, and for the 3 min when your group is making their presentation. This time will be:
- 1005 - 1030
And the presentations will be any 5 min in the following 45 min.
But outside those times, you are welcome to do other work - there will be WiFi access.
