Wellcome Trust 4 Year PhD Programme in Metabolic and Cardiovascular Disease
Up to 5 studentships, starting October 2015
Application deadline: 4th January 2014
Interviews to be held week starting 26th January 2015
This exciting, interdisciplinary PhD programme is based at the Wellcome Trust-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science (IMS), an internationally leading research institute on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
Metabolic and cardiovascular diseases are remarkably diverse research areas that cross many of the traditional departmental and subject boundaries.
Improved understanding of these common disorders is becoming increasingly important as the incidence of obesity, diabetes and related cardiovascular disorders rises worldwide.
The programme involves investigators at the IMS and other world-class institutes and departments across Cambridge. Particular strengths include genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology, systems biology, epigenetics, imaging, behavioural science and vascular biology. The programme will allow you to take advantage of the exceptional strengths of our investigators: choose from approximately 50 Programme Principal Investigators and a range of research approaches.
During the first year students
- develop first-hand research experience through three mini-research projects
- attend weekly ‘hot topics’ led by research leaders
- at the end of the first year, work is submitted for an MRes degree and students select their PhD research project for years 2-4
Support includes stipend at Wellcome Trust rates (starting at £19,919 from October 2015) and fees at either home/EU or overseas rates.
