Impact Poster

Theme for impact posters

The poster must convey an important scientific message that you have an interest in, clearly and concisely to the general public. Examples of winners from last year's competition.

There are no separate categories within this competition.

Each prize winner will be invited to be a guest at the Prize Lunch.


Who can enter?

Entrants must be MPhil, PhD or postdoctoral researchers in the Graduate School of Life Sciences.


How to enter a poster

  • If you want to enter a poster into the competition you must register your entry on the Graduate School of Life Sciences booking system.
  • This can be done straight away, before you have created the poster; we can only exhibit forty posters and this system ensures a participant's poster is accepted before they start work on it. This system does rely on those who have registered to actually submit a poster by the deadline.
  • If you register and then change your mind, please cancel your entry by logging into the booking system or by email at  to allow other entrants from the waiting list to submit work so we have a full exhibition.


Submitting Your Poster

  • There is no need for you to print your poster.
  • Please submit your poster as an electronic file by 23.30 on Sunday 1 March 2015 to in the format below.
  • Please include your name as the file name.
  • The GSLS will print the posters free of charge.
  • An A4 proof of every poster will be available before the A2 poster is printed. These will be available to view at the Department of Biochemistry Reprographics Service from Monday 9 March 2015. You must check the proof for any errors. Any minor editing changes must be reported to the Biochemistry Photography and Graphics Service by 12 noon on Friday 13 March 2015. Posters will not be send out by post - you must visit the Department in person to review the A3 proof of your poster.


Maximum number of entrants

  • The Graduate School of Life Sciences will only accept and display the first twenty posters that are registered in the impact/awareness poster competition.
  • Each graduate researcher may only enter one poster per competition.


Format of the poster

  • Posters can be in portrait or landscape format.
  • Posters that have already been printed and used previously will be accepted as long as they fulfill the theme and format for posters in this competition.
  • Posters must be written in either:

(i) PowerPoint from either PC or Mac computers or

(ii) PDF files

  • Posters produced using PowerPoint must use the 'normal' fonts found within MS Office.
  • Posters should be created with A2 page size (594 x 420 mm)


Judging criteria

The research posters will be judged on the poster's:

(i) impact

(ii) brevity

(iii) communication of scientific message to the general public

(iv) adherence to competition rules


Authorship of the work

  • The poster must have been created by the entrant and it must be made clear who has contributed the work detailed within the poster.
  • All images and text must be acknowledged appropriately. It is the responsibility of all participants to make sure that images and text used in the posters are within copyright laws.



The deadline for all submissions is 23.30 on Sunday 1 March 2015.


Free Printing

The GSLS will print all posters that are successfully submitted by the deadline, free of charge to the postgraduate researcher.


Venue and Schedule

  • The event will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday 18 March 2015 in the University Centre, Hicks Room.
  • Participants must be at the exhibition from 13.00-15.00 to explain their work to the judges and visitors in order to qualify to win a prize. Prize winners will be announced at 15.30.


Transferable skills credits

Students entering the poster competition will be awarded two transferable skills credits.

All work is free for participants to collect, either from (i) the exhibition venue on 20 March 2014 from 09.00 - 10.30 or (ii) from Meg Staff Office on the second floor at 17 Mill Lane contact )
