Teaching & Outreach


There are various opportunities for teaching during postgraduate and postdoctoral research at Cambridge. It is an excellent opportunity to build up new skills and boost your CV. However, you should make sure that your supervisor is happy with the amount of teaching that you take on.

The main opportunities for teaching are:

  • Undergraduate practical class demonstrating

Undergraduate Supervisions and Demonstrating

General information about supervising can be found in the PdOC Guide to College Supervisions.

It is a requirement that all new postgraduates who want to supervise undergraduates have received training. The Researcher Development Programme (RDP) run a workshop that is recognised as training for this requirement.

Formal training is not required for Practical Class Demonstrating, although RDP do run a trainin workshop once a year during the Michaelmas Term. Further information about practical class demonstrating should be available by talking to staff who run the practical classes. You will need to look at the Natural Sciences Tripos.


Information about Undergraduate Structure and Lectures

As a member of the University, you are entitled to attend any undergraduate lectures that you want, which is detailed in The Reporter. But please be courteous and contact the relevant lecturer in advance to let them know.


Resources for Supervising Undergraduates

The Centre for Applied Research in Educational Technologies has developed resources to help support supervisions.

The University has produced a number of short videos about undergraduate life, which are targetted at new undergraduates but may be useful reference for those who are new to Cambridge and want to supervise undergraduates.


Accreditation; Teaching Associates Programme

The Teaching Associate Programme (TAP) is a year-long programme which supports early career researchers who have some responsibility for teaching and learning.  TAP is accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA), and, if you successfully complete all elements of the programme, you will become an Associate Fellow of the HEA. Applications are open to researchers from any discipline who can confirm both that they have the minimum prior experience of teaching or supporting learning within higher education and that they will have some teaching during the programme. In this way, the programme enables you to reflect on your own current practice, to explore ideas and approaches for enhancing your teaching, and to think about your future development as a higher education professional.

There is an introductory session, plus four days of complusory training, which you must complete, but otherwise the programme has a high level of flexibility and participants are expected to plan their TAP work to fit around other activities. Help and support is available throughout the year to enable students to achieve this, and to get the best from the programme.

TAP is open to applications each summer with a strict deadline in late September each year.

Accreditation; Higher Education Academy

An alternative to the TAP progamme, is that you can submit your own application for accreditation to the Higher Education Academy. Full information is available on their website. 


Teaching and Outreach in the RDF

Delivering Lectures

Opportunities to deliver undergraduate lectures can arise. RDP run a two-hour training session on lecturing twice per year.
